WA Croatian Chamber of Commerce and Consulate Wish Cricketers Well in Upcoming
Tournament
In a function held in the offices of the Croatian Consulate in Perth on the
28th of July 2004, Acting Consul General Tihomir Telišman and Member of
Executive committee of the WA Croatian Chamber of Commerce amd former State
Cricketer Dennis Yagmich congratulated and wished well Jeff Grzinić and Phil
Šiljeg in their upcoming representation for the Croatian National Cricket Team
in the European Representative tournament to be held in Slovenia.
Jeff and Phil both play in the WACA Pennant Competition. Jeff plays for Perth
Cricket Club as an opening batsman or middle order player who occasionally
rolls his arm over as well. Jeff's family comes from the village of Buzet in
northern Istria. Through playing cricket Jeff has realised a life long dream to
play international cricket. He has also reconnected with his Croatian heritage
since visiting the country for the first in 22 years and is actively seeking to
promote and develop the game in Croatia. He is also convincing his younger
brother, a promising batsman and swing bowler to become involved as well.
Phil plays for Willeton and is a tall fast bowler. His family are from Dalmatia
- around Omiš. He similarly expressed his desire to develop the game in
Croatia and convince other's to have a go playing for Croatia as well. With the
help of the diaspora community and the strong sporting nature of the Croats
there is a strong and sound belief that success can be achieved.
Tom Pivac from Midland Guildford Cricket Club and Kookaburra has also lent his
support with a donation of equipment for the boys to take to Croatia.
